Basically the same points as what Daniel and Daniel made in the other emails in terms of portability and "can't predict future uses", but for the actual main purpose of this envvar - reproducible building under arbitrary paths - rather than a secondary purpose like communication across a text-only channel.

Personally I agree, the former is more important than the latter.
