The Future Present: Reproducible Builds

Free and Open Source Software is an amazing gift to the world at
large, building and growing the commons. In the present day, some of
the opportunities and freedoms are lost to most people. People are
using Free and Open Source Software routinely, perhaps without even
realizing it. But we do not generally have the freedom we were perhaps
naively promising ourselves and others. All too much theoretically
free software runs on black boxes, be they phones, routers, or user
interfaces to household appliances.

But let us look towards a possible future, a future perhaps even near
to the present, where we not only have access to the source code, but
the ability to confidently verify that the software we rely on was
produceed from specific source code.

Reproducible Builds is one way to confidently verify that a given
artifact was produced from a given source. Numerous free software
projects have already demonstrated the viability of Reproducible
Builds!

Come explore the question with me: in a world where Reproducible
Builds becomes a standard best practice, or even an assumed
requirement, what would that potential future look like?
