As the author of these two attempts I'm also still for adopting either
one, but i'm not going to spend much more time pushing on them given
that they didn't get much support, and did get active pushback which i
found kind of disappointing.

If other people want to pick them up and run with them they have my full
backing, and i hope that my lack of pushing on them isn't seen as an
indication that i don't think they're worthwhile.

I believe the spec should match the real complexities of what we're
trying to do here. It's a bummer that it's more complex than what we'd
want, but we don't do anyone any favors by pretending in the spec that
the complexity doesn't exist.
